West Stow Anglo-Saxon Museum showcases remarkable finds from Snape Anglo-Saxon cemetery
Tuesday 2 September 2025
Through a generous loan from Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service, visitors to West Stow Anglo-Saxon Museum can now explore grave goods unearthed during late 20th-century excavations.
The archaeological discoveries revealed a fascinating burial ground featuring log boat interments, eight ring ditches, coffin burials, and cremations preserved in both urns and copper vessels, alongside evidence of ceremonial funeral pyres.
Among the extraordinary finds are rare grave goods including a lyre and a horse's head complete with bridle fittings. These 1,400-year-old burials offer glimpses into diverse religious beliefs, cultural connections, and social hierarchies of Anglo-Saxon society.
Exceptionally preserved organic materials - including fragments of textile, leather and horn - provide invaluable insights into both the objects themselves and the lives of those laid to rest with these precious possessions.
This extraordinary collection of ancient artefacts will remain on display until Thursday 11 December and is included with standard admission.
